Large breed puppies require a special diet. Your puppy should only be fed a high quality LARGE BREED PUPPY FOOD. Do NOT feed your puppy a regular puppy food. Doing so can cause serious bone, joint and hip problems which can be very costly and painful for your dog. These foods have properly balanced levels of calcium and phosphorus, and are lower in fat and protein which allows your puppy to grow at a slower rate, lessening the likelihood that he will develop hip, bone and joint problems. (Don’t worry, your dog will still grow to be the same size!) Wolf Cub by Solid Gold and Avoderm Large Breed Puppy food has been highly recommended by several breeders as the protein and fat levels are optimized for proper large breed growth.
High energy diets, like most puppy foods, can promote rapid growth in large breed puppies, which can play a role in the development of orthopedic diseases.Large Breed Puppy Formula contains lower amounts of protein, fat, calories, and calcium than regular Puppy Food to help control the growth process. Research shows that a Calcium level of 1.5% or less is the most suitable for a large breed puppy.

Diet - This is covered fully in the. Basically "over nutrition", especially of calcium, phosphorus and calories is believed to play a major part in hip and elbow issues. Most people with large breed puppies want it them to be big. That's fine, but if large or giant breed dogs are pushed too hard, by overfeeding or by giving excessive mineral intake, then growth and development will not proceed correctly and hip/ elbow dysplasia can result. Also keep play time down to a nice walk for the 1st year. No wild running are large bursts of rumming/play. You can play a fun/calm game of fetch or have your golden swim to their hearts desire.

A large crate
This is a must have for all new puppies. They need their safe place a place to call their own. Crate and Den training is a very basic principle based on centuries-old instincts in dogs. Dogs are den animals, they like to have a secure, clean, semi-darkened nesting space, away from all other distractions.. Crate training utilizes this instinct to aid housetraining, provide security when you can not be around, and to give your dog a safe haven when he is stressed out. It is used until fully potty trained. After that you dog will go in and out when it wants a nice place to call his own and take a nap. This is great while traveling to Hotels or friends homes.
~note~ a 3' X-Pen is great in combo with a crate. You can attach the X-Pen to the opening of the crate and you will have a great potty area, play area, and resting area.

Bowls~ all stainless steel. I like them to be elevated.
Bed~ any faux fur or cozy pillow bed (Go to Costco and get their round pillow bed/ It is a great price and a great bed!)
Toys~ the bigger the better, they like the AKC faux fur toys from Target…small balls…and lots to chew on. No NYLA bones.
Clothing~ Go to Target and have a blast/ they have a great line of doggie dress up at 1/2 -1/6 the price of the specialty stores...
