The foundation of the breed in North America owes a great deal to Col. Samuel Magoffin and his Rockhaven Kennels in North Vancouver, B.C. In 1930, Col. Magoffin imported Am.Can. Ch. Speedwell Pluto, one of the major foundation sires of the breed on this continent. This dog won the first Best in Show ever won by a Golden Retriever in North America at the Puget Sound Kennel Club in December 1933 and was also used regularly as a hunting companion.
